pinchebicicleta:

I made tempeh BLTs the other night and they turned out so GD delicious that I felt I owed it to everyone to try and share the experience, and since I probably wont have the pleasure of cooking for most of you I figured maybe i should write about it (even though most people wont give two shits, i dont give a fuck though im writing it anyways).

Stupidly delicious fake ass BLTs are definitely not the healthiest recipe, but its also not the most unhealthy either, and its just real damn good. So here we go.

Now for the tempeh bacon I used an adulterated version of Isa Moskowitz’s recipe - which is:

  • 3 tablespoons Braggs Liquid Aminos or tamari or soy sauce
  • 1/3 cup apple cider
  • 1 teaspoon tomato paste
  • 1/4 teaspoon liquid smoke
  • 1 (8-ounce) package tempeh
  • 2 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 2 tablespoons peanut oil or vegetable oil

I suggest adding worcestershire sauce and red onion, and instead of just whisking all the ingredients together I highly suggest putting all the ingredients (besides the tempeh, you wanna slice that and put it aside) through a blender. I made the marinade in the morning so i could let the tempeh slices soak throughout the day.

Now after you’ve let those little tempeh babies bath in awesome juice all day its time to dig in, which is perfect for when its been a hell of a long day and you come home hungry and just wanna eat. So when you get home, pull those marinated bad boys outta the fridge, put a little oil in your skillet and fry those little tasty babies up - i prefer my fake tempeh bacon to be crispy, so i tend to push the boundaries on what is considered ‘burnt,’ but that is simply preference, or not, maybe thats the only way they are tasty … i dont know.

You can use these amazing little tempeh strips to construct any number of amazing concoctions. They are delicious in wraps, on salads, or on top of fuckin’ mashed potatoes and green beans, but I tend to go the more traditional sandwich route whenever I make them. We all know the foundation to any good sandwich is the bread, so take your time and find some damn fine bread to house this sammich. My preference is for a marbled rye (pictured above) - this rad bar in Boston used to (it’s closed now) serve tempeh BLTs on rye, and as soon i tried their’s and tasted how well the bread’s flavors complimented the sandwich i could no longer use any other bread for fake ass BLTs. After you find the perfect bread the building is magnificently simple (like any sandwich, for the most part), throw your favorite veggies in the mix, add some vegannaise and whatever, then eat that mother fucker.

THE COMPLIMENTARY SIDE DISH!!!! dun dun dun.

Garlic Rosemary Fries made from hand cut red potatoes.

Although the tempeh BLT sammich is perfectly delicious on its own I will always be a sucker for a side dish. Side dishes can be as simple or complicated as you like, but I’m a simple fellow who loves amazing food, so i try and find the simplest way (which isnt always all that simple) to put delicious things in my mouth. Last night I went with the hand cut fries - chop em, mix em in a bowl with olive oil, garlic, rosemary, S&P, and then bake em! easypeasy and goddamn fantastic.

So yeah, that was last night’s dinner.
